Many people suffering from leukemia, lymphoma, Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) can be treated through a bone marrow transplant.
On any day there are more than 6,000 people searching the registry for a match.
Becoming a donor or joining the registry is an easy process:
- You can join the registry online [ here ]and have a cotton swab kit sent to your home for tissue typing. The cost is currently $52. All you have to do is swab the inside of your cheeks and send it back. That is all it takes to have the chance to save someone’s life.
- You can join the registry in person at a local bone marrow drive or through your local
[ NMDP donor center ].

Question - Does donating always require surgery?
Fact: Adult donors are asked to donate one of two ways, either by donating marrow (surgical procedure) or donating peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC), which is a non-surgical procedure done in an outpatient clinic or blood donation center.
Question - Does it hurt to be a donor?
Fact: The marrow donor is always put under general anesthesia.
Question - Is there a lengthy recovery process?
Fact: The marrow donor will probably feel some soreness in the lower back for a couple of days or longer. Most donors are back to their usual routine in a few days.
Question - Does donating weaken the donor's system?
Fact: Bone marrow is completely replaced by your body in 4-6 weeks.
